Design and production of biomaterials with tailorable properties
We are interested in the design and synthesis of protein-based materials for biomedical and engineering applications. Using genetic approach, we build materials at the DNA level and synthesize them using the bacterial protein synthesis machinery. This method allows complete control over the chemical and physical properties of the material, which can be customized according to the desired application.
Protein templates for nanomaterial synthesis
Recombinant proteins can be engineered to display moeities with affinities for metallic precusors in solution. Here, we can independently fine-tune the architectures and chemistries of 2D and 3D nanomaterials. These nanostructures have applications in energy, bioremediation etc.
 
In other words, we are always looking for novel methods to create functional nanostructures with exciting properties!
Genetically engineered microbes with novel functions
We have interest to genetically modify microbes for environmental engineering applications: to take up unwanted pollutants from wastewater, digest foodwaste etc..
 
We are also interested in novel ways to rechannel these pollutants into other useful products!
